Cilantro is a herbaceous plant of the Apiaceae family. It is cultivated and used as a condiment in many temperate countries around the world. Coriander is used in countless recipes, particularly in Asia, Latin America, and Mediterranean cuisine.
It is the dried fruits (not the seeds) that are cultivated. They are, in fact, the source of many spices, such as curry, for example.
Cilantro leaves are also used and known for their a slightly anise-like flavor.
The word «coriander» comes from the Greek koriannon, which itself comes from koris, which means «stink bug,» because cilantro has such a strong smell.
Did you know? Cilantro is found in many liqueurs, such as schnapps and gin.
