Maniguette is a perennial plant whose fruit resembles a brown pod containing many small seeds. This plant is common in subtropical Africa.
This plant has many nicknames: paradise seed, malaguetta, Guinea pepper, paradise pepper… At the time, it was one of the most widely exported commodities in West Africa, starting in the 14th century.
Its very peppery flavor is a delight to many spice lovers. In fact, its aroma is reminiscent of cardamom or ginger. Its peppery flavor is very sharp—even burning.
The maniguette has more than one trick up its sleeve and can be used in a wide variety of recipes: soups, lamb, eggplant, potatoes, and even mulled wine!
