WHITE PEPPER FROM PENJA
Penja White Pepper (Piper nigrum / traditional spice), an aromatic spice with sweet, slightly spicy, and subtly full-bodied notes, is ideal for enhancing sauces, soups, fish, poultry, and refined dishes. Prized for its stimulating and digestive properties, it adds finesse, intensity, and character to all your culinary creations. Derived from natural sources, it guarantees a unique aroma and carefully selected quality.
Penja white pepper was the first product from sub-Saharan Africa to be granted a designation of origin and quality by the European Union in 2013. This makes it a source of pride for farmers in this small region of Cameroon, where it has been grown and exported since the 1950s. It has adapted very well to the volcanic soil of its host country; production, which is done by hand, does not yield large volumes, making it a rare spice.
It comes in the form of grayish-white peppercorns, larger than those from some other regions. Thanks to its volcanic terroir, Penja white pepper is exceptional for its woody and powerful aroma. Its distinctive flavor—both fresh and meaty—is highly prized by top chefs. Be warned—its heat can be surprising!
Did you know? Before pepper became Penja’s star product, the region mainly grew bananas. Since receiving its PGI designation—which has caused its value to triple in 18 months—more and more farmers are turning to pepper.
