RABELAIS SPICES

Original and Official Recipe

LHG—official producer of the famous Rabelais Spices

Rabelais spices were created in Marseille in 1880. Raynaud de Mazan, a curious and imaginative man, came up with the idea of combining—in a blend whose recipe has been jealously guarded ever since—spices brought back from Africa and Asia, along with herbs from the Mediterranean hills.

Rabelais spices thus became a symbol of the fusion of the Orient and Provence, lending a distinctive flavor to the region’s traditional dishes. From 1898 to 1915, numerous awards and medals recognized and highlighted the quality of Rabelais products at many national and international exhibitions.

Rabelais spices quickly became a staple in home cooking and in the preparation of offal and cured meats. Even today, Rabelais spices are highly prized for the incomparable flavor they add to cured meat products.

1987: LHG ACQUIRES ÉPICES RABELAIS

A recipe that hasn't changed since 1880

In 1987, the Laboratoire d’Herboristerie Générale (LHG) resumed the production and distribution of Rabelais spices, strictly adhering to the recipe passed down to it (unchanged since 1880). «Remember the Taste» is the theme of a poster campaign and a major cooking contest.

In 1994, to mark the 500th anniversary of François Rabelais’s birth, an original poster was published: «Rabelais spices are a testament to a flavorful and generous cuisine, just like François Rabelais himself—curious about everything, a humanist, and a bon vivant with a universal spirit.»

In the year 2000—a milestone year—Rabelais Spices celebrated its 120th anniversary by publishing a calendar that chronicles the history of the little yellow-and-red package through images.
