Gentian root comes from several species belonging to the family of Gentianaceae. It is known for its countless benefits, which give it many different properties:
- aromatics
- in watchmaking : Its wood, which is both flexible and sturdy, is considered a material of choice.
- culinary : the base for many liqueurs: Suze, Avèze, Salers, Bonal, Picon, Devil's Fork… Gentian is also widely used to make herbal tea.
- therapeutic : treats gastrointestinal disorders and liver problems. More generally, gentian has the ability to tone and purify the body.
- cosmetics : Gentian is the main note in many perfumes
All over the world, the French gentian is primarily a wild plant. The best-known gentian has flowers of a rare blue color. Other, larger species delight us with magnificent yellow or red flowers. Many regions protect this species: picking or uprooting it is prohibited.

Some species of gentian are endemic to several regions of France. For example, the narrow-leaved gentian is found only in the French Alps.
